Among the true classics from the Carole King-Gerry Goffin songbook, this was a top-5 pop & R&B hit for the Drifters, as well as having returned to the record charts in later years by various other artists. Note that some reissue versions begin with a vocal by the group singing “up on the roof” on top of the instrumental opening which is heard alone on the single release.
