This is another case of good things being found in unexpected places. Despite the wear and tear - the record is, after all, over 110 years old - it is apparent that this is a first-rate performance by a first-rate artist. Godard's 'Valse' was, in fact, a favourite showpiece of Fransella.

Albert Fransella (1865-1935) was born in Amsterdam and came to England when 18.In 1895, he became principal flautist in the Queen's Hall Orchestra, a position he held until 1919, when he retired from orchestral work to devote himself to teaching and solo playing. He was a successful and influential teacher of the flute at both the Guildhall School of Music and Trinity College.
