Voice Memos is the latest project from Canadian experimental composer Yvan Sheremetieff. The sprawling three-part album is a meditation on nature, authenticity, unconscious motives, metacognition, and new possibilities in art. These are mainly phone recordings of performed music, environmental sounds, and spoken word. Some of the recordings are deliberate, while others are accidental. Some were left untouched, while others were doctored. The third part was created together with OpenAI Jukebox, a music-generating artificial intelligence program. Spanning the continuum from raw natural output to machine creations, Voice Memos repeatedly asks what is real and why is that important.
Released on December 1, 2020
Recorded during summer and fall of 2020 by Yvan Sheremetieff
Various other people appear on these recordings, including XSQ, Feo PS, and Ryan Hoeve; as well as birds and crickets, advertisements, and spa music on the Internet.
OpenAI Jukebox created many of the things heard on \"the beginning\", \"temp .98\", \"chinese room\" and \"nature/last bird singing”.
