The first of two international hits in 1986 for celebrated Jamaican singer-bassist Boris Gardiner, written by Nashville-based songwriter Ben Peters, ‘I Want To Wake Up with You" was first recorded in 1980 by US country music artist and actor Mac Davis as ‘I Wanta Wake Up With You’.
Six years later, Gardiner covered the song as ‘I Want to Wake Up with You" (aka I Wanna Wake Up with You), with his lilting reggae interpretation hitting the UK Number one spot No. 1 on the Singles chart on August 1986, finally surrendering the position on .
The record was the country’s third best-selling single of year also reached number 3 in South Africa, where it spent a total of 18 weeks on the national charts.
Among the subsequent versions of the song are covers by fellow Jamaican John Holt, Engelbert Humperdinck and noted country singers, Johnny Rodriguez and Christy Lane.
