If Gary was on the cruise ship, the ship sets sail and doesn't return, but Gary battles you afterward ... where does the ship actually disembark?!
Pictures at an Exhibition is an 1874 piano piece by Modest Mussorgsky (later orchestrated by Maurice Ravel in a very famous interpretation) that is inspired by a visit to an art exhibition. The piece contains ten movements inspired by exisiting pieces of artwork, and intertwining these ten movements is a \"Promenade\" theme where Mussorgsky depicts himself roaming through the exhibition from piece to piece and reflecting on the artwork. This Promenade theme has received particular notoriety and is quoted many times in movies, commercials, and even video games.
The first time I listened to Pictures at an Exhibition, it struck me how similar the original S.S. Anne theme is to the Promenades. I had initially heard Ravel's orchestration -- the first movement is characterized largely by the trumpets in the main melody. So this \"Pictures of the S.S. Anne\" cover tries to take those similarities and amp them up to 11! You'll hear orchestration as similar to Ravel's as I could come up with using a trumpet and four trombones, and if you listen hard enough you'll even hear several specific references to the Promenade theme itself (especially at the end).
For the video, I thought it would be fun to simulate an art gallery experience, as the Promenade in Pictures at an Exhibition is all about wandering from artwork to artwork. You'll see plenty of famous paintings as well as some references to Pokemon and other video games! The green screen effect isn't perfect on the software that I use to edit videos, but, well, it's fun trying something new!
Usually I try to upload videos at least once every two weeks on Fridays. However, this weekend I was at MagLabs and wanted to take the extra time to focus on my production quality. I did a few different things during the editing and mixing process this time around, and I think it's a couple steps in the right direction! Let me know if you have any audio feedback to consider!
*** Huge thanks to Robby Duguay for providing trumpet on this cover, as well as some mixing tips. Check out his stuff at https://robbyduguay.bandcamp.com/ ***
