After the worldwide success of Saturday Night Fever in 1977, Casablanca Records set out to equal that with their 1978 movie Thank God It's Friday featuring Donna Summer as Nicole, an inspiring singer to be, but neither the film nor the accompanying soundtrack album (released in conjunction with Motown) came anywhere near the success that Travolta & The Bee Gees achieved. The only song from the soundtrack to have any significant chart success was Donna Summer's Last Dance which became her signature tune and a #3 hit in the US.
The original album was released as a 2LP set with a bonus 12\" single, Donna Summer with a 15 min. version of Je t'aime which she had originally recorded early 1977 for a Valentine's Day release (it was eventually cancelled). When St. Tropez then released a hugely successful Je t'aime, Casablanca released a promo 12\" with Donna's version in the summer of 1977 but found DJ response disappointing and withdrew it. It finally found its home here.
