I guess I have a yearly tradition of doing a Pokmon Mystery Dungeon cover in the summer now? PMD is one of my most personally nostalgic games, and I always have so much fun getting to re-interpret the music from a series that's so close to me! I think the music in these games is criminally underrated - the game could have been shipped with a run-of-the-mill OST that someone might expect of a spinoff title from a beloved franchise, but I'd argue that some parts of the soundtrack to PMD1 & PMD2 surpass that of the main series franchise! It's that good - Arata Iiyoshi is a legend who deserves more recognition!
Anyone who's played a good amount of PMD will have encountered at least one Monster House in their time, and if you're not equipped properly, it can be one of the most awful (yet wonderful!) things. My started in PMD1 was Charmander, so I luckily had access to Heat Wave as a Charizard for later dungeons, and it made whole-floor Monster Houses in the Silver Trench an absolute breeze. The Monster House music is perfectly fitting, too! It immediately alerts you to what's going on, and raises tensions levels up a ton, I love it so much.
I've had the idea to cover this song for a while in the style of Some Skunk Funk by the Brecker Brothers, which has been one of my favorite jazz fusion tracks for a few years now. I love the ridiculously fast tempo and complex harmony / melody lines, as well as the driving groove that the tune has. I've also been checking out Thank You Scientist's new record Terraformer recently, which gave me the inspiration to incorporate some more prog style stuff in my arrangements. I was fortunate enough to have the help of collaborators Max Boiko and Jonny Atma fill the roles of Randy Brecker and Tom Monda, respectively! They're both killer players (evidenced by the fact they could play this chart, it's not an easy one by any means), so I'd highly recommend checking out their social media! Thanks for listening :)
