SIDE ONE
THE BEGINNING
* 1. Overture 00:04
They were proud people. They came from Africa, ancient land of tribal culture and customs, a land where for thousands of years drums and dance had spoken with vibrant eloquence. Captured by slave traders, survivors of the grim passage to America clung to one remnant of their heritage that slavery could not deny-music. In the fields and cabins of southern plantations, rhythms of Africa were gradually woven into the coarse fabric of an all-too-often harsh life.
The overture to Dixieland Jazz takes us back to those early days for a glimpse of the dramatic moments that would later find expression in the music we now call jazz.
Fanfare sounds of Africa; invasion of the slave traders, arrival in the South, field chant, \"Hail the Steamboat\", slave woman singing her blue notes; \"Long Boat Comin',\" a levee holler; steamboats bring a new tune, \"Dolly Blue,\" with roots in slave melodies; \"Dolly Blue\" as a waltz, \" Dolly Blue,\" first sound of an old brass band, then in ragtime and in Dixieland.
