Final Fantasy V, the one with the most Butz jokes.
Though Final Fantasy V might not be the most standout title in the franchise, the main theme that plays during the introduction and overworld is a highlight. The rhythmic and instrumental choices give this theme enormous adventurous spirit; however, the chromaticism belies a hint of tragedy - not all is at piece on the continent, and an enormous epic is about to unfold. Not sure what to call this theme - I've seen it as \"Final Fantasy V Main Theme,\" \"Ahead on Our Way,\" \"Four Valiant Hearts,\" \"Introduction,\" and possibly a few others, but for the purposes of this upload, I'll refer to it as the Final Fantasy V Main Theme.
My main goal with this arrangement was put it into a radically different style/genre as well as context. Looking through some of my other recent videos, I'd mostly been adhering to the existing style while adding more to it or embellishing upon it in some way. So this video is instead a more drastic departure from the original.
The Final Fantasy V melody kept coming back to my head, and that's when I knew I wanted to provide this, what I call an \"atmospheric\" take. I recently played the indie puzzle game Gorogoa (which I highly recommend!), and that served as a huge source of inspiration. The beautifully illustrated and innovative puzzles in Gorogoa seem bizarre initially but follow their own \"dream logic\" patterns that the player learns to recognize through time, trial and error, and experience.
This dream logic - abstract yet discernible patterns - inspired a lot of my arrangement decisions. I approached this idea by setting myself rules for how the chords and rhythms must interact, as if creating a Gorogoa puzzle myself. For example, some of the clearer ones are that each measure must be a different meter and that the melody itself must be left unaltered in pitch. The middle section provides more dissonant harmonies, highlighted by augmented triads and minor second clashes far from the original alternating harmonies, and you can see something happen visually to reflect that as well.
Anyway, hope you enjoy! Just one trombone and piano without too many tricks this time, but there are some really neat collabs in the works coming soon! Be sure to subscribe so you don't miss the new upcoming collabs, and thanks a lot for listening!
