A TRIBUTE TO LEONA
This collection of songs is dedicated to Leona Hogan Rhone, my mother. It is a tribute to her and the many women
of her generation who unselfishly cared for and raised their families through hard and challenging times. They
faced those challenges with determination, courage and prayer.
Leona was a kind and gentle woman who greeted people with a smile and good cheer.
Although she demonstrated strength in most instances, she realized and faced her fears, i.e., spider and tornados, with either a
heavy or speedy foot, whichever the case merited!
Her life was dedicated to God, family and community.
In 1942, she married Thomas Charlie Rhone, aka Choctaw;
as he was known in his younger years. Charlie and Leona raised four children and numerous family pets, including
Frisky and the grey hounds, in a small north Texas town. To Leona?s credit, her children; Mike, Steve, Becky and
Kathy lived good lives blessed by the memories and wisdom of their mother.
Growing up in a musical family and influenced by their mother and father?s love of music, the Rhone kids formed a
family band, ?The Cherry Rhone Band?. Charlie and Leona traveled with the band across Texas and Oklahoma.
Although she loved to dance and enjoyed the band, Leona never approved of the times when certain band
members indulged themselves in drink. Her smile would quickly turn to a look of great disappointment. In spite of
it all, it was a very special and proud time for Charlie and Leona.
Leona battled asthma her entire life and in 1982 she was stricken with cancer and died soon after.
Leona was an inspiration to so many people and these songs are our tribute to her life, her love and her memory.
