A Nico concert in Milwaukee, Wisconsin? Unlikely as it seems the event actually occurred in a small club, early in 1980. When the audience began to gather, many people were surprised to see that they weren’t the only fans outside of New York who came to witness a rare appearance by singer, actress, ex-member of you-know-what band: NICO.
Nico’s voice was in great form (listen to the screaming/wailing entrance to Genghis Khan) and her friendly comments came often. Her songs that night covered early and later compositions, as well as songs from the then-unreleased “Drama of Exile” LP.
In the context of live rock, it was quite a show. One woman and a Harmonium, without the aid of back-up or excessive amplification, proved that a solo performance can be as dramatic, and memorable, as any band.
Appropriately enough, the evening concluded with a superb rendition of “The End”. Nico then left the stage, the audience left, and those lucky enough to have heard that remarkable performance have bragged about it ever since.
