MABEL LEE
Like Vanita Smythe, ex-chorus girl Mabel Lee's recorded legacy was tiny, but her looks made her perfect for the Soundie's punters who preferred a little glamour with their hot jazz and she can be spotted as a dancer - or just eye-candy - in any number of the films; she is accompanied here by the youthful pianist Deryck Sampson's band which included Jimmy Shirley on guitar. Mabel Lee recorded her only known commercial recordings in the mid 1950s, for the NYC-based Hull Records, although A Mabel Lee (could it be the same one?) also recorded with Ray Ellington's Quartet in London for Parlophone in 1948! Mabel died in 2019.
