After being dropped from Columbia Records following the release of his 1989 compilation \"Crazy Daddy\", David Allan Coe was without a major record deal. As such, he resorted to issuing albums of new material on his self-owned record label, DAC Records, which was responsible for his infamous \"X-Rated\" albums in the late 1970s and early 1980s, in addition to the soundtrack to the film \"Buckstone County Prison\" (in which Coe appeared in a supporting role). In 1990, Coe issued the album \"1990 Songs For Sale\"; three years later he issued two more albums on his own label, \"Standing Too Close To The Flame\" and \"Granny's Off Her Rocker.\" The very next year, Coe signed a new deal with King Records, which allowed him to release new material as well as re-recordings of his classic songs. However, in the midst of this deal Coe issued yet another album, \"Living On The Edge\", once again via his own label in 1996. Each of these independent releases were exclusively sold at Coe's concerts and via his fanclub. Some were cannibalized for later compilations, such as the 2001 release \"Songwriter Of The Tear.\" All four are hard to find and out of print as of 2016, though \"1990 Songs For Sale\" and \"Living On The Edge\" are available via most major digital retailers. All are underrated works from a (somewhat unfairly) maligned country music auteur.
