This famous tango--translated as “little parade”--was originally composed as a carnival march in 1916 by 18 year-old Uruguayan musician Gerardo Matos Rodriguez. It was further refined and adapted to a tango rhythm by orchestra leader Roberto Firpo, who made the first recording of “La Cumparsita.” Lyrics were added some years later.
