The Lincolnshire Poacher

Playing Next: Martin Ikin - Warrior Call
Random Page  /  Random Song

Sung by Gavin Atkin, accompanied by a two-row, eight-bass C/F melodeon from the 1920s.

I strongly suspect the roots of this song lie in the enclosures, a time when Parliament legislated to enclose the villages and give the land to the already rich and powerful - driving many into hunger and poverty. It was a lesson in why we cannot trust politicians backed by powerful interests to make decisions that benefit the common, working man and his family...

Another reason I like to sing this song is that I grew up in the small town of Caistor. I sing and play a number of songs and tunes associated with the county of Lincolnshire.

The painting is by William Hemsley, and is dated 1874. I found it on the wonderful Wikimedia Commons https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/8/85/William_Hemsley_The_young_poacher_1874.jpg

English: The young poacher. Signed and dated W. Hemsley.74. Oil on canvas, 43.5 x 33.5 cm. The scan seems to have been made by Bonhams - I guess they had it in for auction.
