I strongly suspect the roots of this song lie in the enclosures, a time when Parliament legislated to enclose the villages and give the land to the already rich and powerful - driving many into hunger and poverty. It was a lesson in why we cannot trust politicians backed by powerful interests to make decisions that benefit the common, working man and his family...
Another reason I like to sing this song is that I grew up in the small town of Caistor. I sing and play a number of songs and tunes associated with the county of Lincolnshire.
