This original version of \"Grey Seal\" was released as the B-side to the \"Rock and Roll Madonna\" single in 1970. Recorded in January 1970 with Gus Dudgeon producing and arranged by Paul Buckmaster. Later the song was re-recorded for the \"Goodbye Yellow Brick Road\" in 1973.

About the song lyricist Bernie Taupin has said, \" 'Grey Seal' was very oblique. I hadn't a clue what I was writing about. It was just images.\"
