Mitsuda is one of my all-time favorite video game composers. His harmonic language and great melodic writing is able to create diverse and immersive atmospheres in the world of video games! If youve played any of the Chrono games, or recently, Xenoblade Chronicles 2, Im sure youre well aware of what Im talking about.
Chrono Trigger is a very special game to me! I played through it at the same time with one of my closest friends, and fell in love with the characters, plot, and overall message of the game! Magus is up there in my top 5 favorite video game villains (with Cyrus from Pokmon DPPt at the top). Magus battle theme is incredibly fun to play and listen to. I love how the intro sets the moon for the battle, and then jumps into an intense restatement of the theme.
To recreate some of my sentiments of this battle musically, I decided to extent the intro a bit, and add some aleatoric and dissonant sax background parts. Theyre pretty strange, yes but thematically, they definitely convey the sense of unease I was going for in the arrangement! I did different things with each background part - some of them using multiphonics to create low guttural sounds, while others played high screeching parts to simulate the laughs of Magus that can be heard throughout the track! Following the intro, I went into a straight 3/4 groove, and contrasted that with some sections of jazz waltz, as heard during the bridge and the piano solo. One of my favorite things about this tune other than the eerie atmosphere of the introduction is the section that alternates between 5/4 and 7/4! That was so much fun to play on drums & piano, as Im sure you can tell by my facial expressions! Overall, this was a really enjoyable and difficult tune to put together - hope you enjoy!
