Lojay est une chanteuse banjoïste de jazz française.
As a little girl, Laurence dreamed of conquering America. At the age of 36 her dream came true, no longer as a member or guest of a band like before, but this time under her own name Laurence “Lo” Jay. George Buck, founder of GHB Records in New Orleans wanted her in his legendary specialized catalog! That’s how she became in May 2007, the only French female jazz singer ever produced in New Orleans.
She named the team that would accompany her “the Jazz Addicts”, chose its members and crafted the repertoire of the album. She gave the musical direction to trombonist Sébastien Arruti, a friend of hers, and surrounded herself with his faithful acolytes Guillaume Nouaux, Julien Brunetaud, Sébastien Girardot, Jacques Gauthé, Ryan Burrage, Duke Heitger and newcomer David Blenkhorn.
The idea for this album came from producer George Buck who suggested the hitherto unknown Pickering’s answer song to Laurence Lo Jay.
Lo is also paying a tribute to those who inspired her and helped her to know what it means… Anita O’Day, Gene Kruppa, Hoagy Carmichael, Harry Connick Jr and Edith Piaf.
But most of all to the immortal JACQUES GAUTHÉ, a true Gascon in his heart and soul who passed away only a few weeks after the recording session of the album, leaving his last sweet musical trace on « When you’re smiling », the very first song Lo was invited to sing on stage in NOLA by Jacques himself.
« Thanks for your generosity, faith and joyfulness, Papy Jacques… Makarel!» Lo
