SHIKANTAZA was composed on Male Noise shared system in the Fall/Winter of 2020.Of Aire is usually know for more minimal, experimental and avant-garde compositions but this album focuses more on traditional harmonic structures found in western classical music.
Sleep was originally conceived as a four hour piece of music for our son River Roshi to sleep to. After 1 hour I felt the piece was complete and could not extend the length any further.
It is one of the most harmonic of all the OF AIRE works, never particularly straying from It's key of E Maj. It begins with a long droning section in B and moves through F# Maj, only momentarily visiting a microtonal section and returning to the sub dominant A Maj. It then winds through a section of C# min and ending back at the super tonic never quite resolving back down to the tonic.
THE ABSENT SITTER was designed to accompany zazen and consists of a rather limited harmonic device but is flourished more with analog textures and timbres.
Recorded digitally at 32/44.1 Special care was taken to not use any hard limiting or compression in the mixing or mastering of these tracks. They are at appropriate listening volumes but feel free to use your volume knobs...better for you to decide the loudness than me.
