There were ten British dance band versions of this popular 1935 tune. Composed by two songwriters who were responsible for big hits in the '20s, Cliff Friend and Irving Caesar. Friend had co-written \"Then I'll be happy\" and \"My blackbirds are bluebirds now\". Caesar as lyricist, had been responsible for \"Tea for two\" and \"Swanee\" amongst many others.
The Ambrose version of \"South American Joe\" is particularly exuberant with an enthusiastic vocal from Donald Stewart. This is one of four songs from the session which credited Ambrose and his Concert orchestra.
Decca re-released this recording in 1939 without reference to Ambrose's \"Concert\" Orchestra and vocalist Donald Stewart did not receive label credit.
Here's the original issue recorded 4th July 1935.
