Tracklist below | Look De Bouk were a French Rock In Opposition and experimental avant-prog band. They released their highly recommended first album 'Lacrimae Rerum' on the French avant-garde and impro label AYAA (formerly known as Recommended Records France) in 1985. They have been compared to other French acts like Pascal Comelade, Aksak Maboul, ZNR and even to The Residents. To me Look De Bouk is a very special group that also comes close to acts like Ptôse, Niew Hip Stilen, Arigret, Samla Mammas Manna and many more. Look De Bouk's musical output can transition from a French Chanson style to Minimal Synth to Improvisational fields.
LDB's often unclassifiable but very French sounds clearly show those deeper corners of the European alternative-impro (AI) scene that was an important existing force throughout the decades of the 70's, 80's and even 90's. Bec Et Ongles was released on AYAA records in 1990 and is a remarkable and dazzling album of improvisational and highly creative absurdity, combining the elements of profound musical skills with the soul of the vast historical French improvisational scene.
This album of the later phase of Look De Bouk in the early 90's displays an even more clever interplay: transitions that flawlessly enter new musical genres and an intelligent musical depth that doesn't compromise to any external power or hype: even though it keeps its own humor it never seems to corrupt. Quite something unique and beautiful from France and the year 1990. We should takes notes in our times.
