Hal Swain led a band in Toronto from 1921 to 1924. It included Dave Caplan. This band was offered a job at Rector's club in London, but the club went out of business during the time the musicians were at sea.
The group found another job at the New Prince's Restaurant in the Piccadilly area of London.
In 1926 Hal Swain quit the band. The remaining band members were offered a job in Berlin. Only a few members of the original band wanted to go.
Arthur Calkin joined the band at this point. He was among Britain's finest bass players. The musicians went to Berlin in August 1926 with the re-named Dave Caplan's Toronto Band. They first played at the Faun Des Westens. In November appeared at La Scala assisting the dance pair Annette Mills and Bobby.
